Bernice (Photosbybern)

How did you get started? Tell us your story!

Bernice (Photosbybern). The first time I touched a camera was during a summer camp when I was 14 years old. Ever since then I knew that I wanted to be involved with cameras whether it was photography or film. I later went on to get a degree in Visual Interactive Media from Seton Hall University and my first year after graduating I started shooting professionally around 2015. The rest is history!

What is your experience in the music industry? Do you have any formal training or schooling? If not, are you self-taught and how did you learn your craft? What is your learning style? What are your favorite educational resources (ex. college, YouTube, etc.)?

I shoot music artists from time to time, but what's changed now that I think is super cool, is that more producers and songwriters are coming out of the shadows making a name for themselves and need content just like the artist does.

What are some credits and achievements that you have? Who have you worked with? Who have you collaborated with?

I've collaborated with so many amazing people in various industries, but I would say the coolest has been working with Youtuber/Influencer Kiitana and working with the skincare brand Pure Tropix.

What are some of the biggest obstacles you’ve encountered or faced in this industry?

Some of the biggest obstacles I've faced, especially in the beginning, are high profile clients not wanting to pay for my services. Of course, when you're building your portfolio you are going to have to shoot some free work but once you're established you can't fold on your pricing. If they can't afford you, they aren't the client for you. Clients who really want to work with you, and respect your craft will pay you, and that's as simple as it gets.

What are some of your goals this year?

This year I want to have another art show and to secure more ongoing brand deals. I really enjoy working with brands and providing them with high-quality content.

Who are the top 3 artists, producers, engineers, videographers, or others you would want to work with that you haven’t worked with yet?

I would love to be able to shoot Shenseea, ODESZA, and Tinashe.

Who are your favorite directors? Who do you want to do a music video with?

I don't know too many music video directors off the top of my head, haha.

What kind of equipment do you have and why?

Canon 80d & Canon 6d Mark ii, and a few lenses but my primary go-to is a 24mm or a 50mm.

What is your creative process like?

Light a spliff, and chat with my friends. They are my biggest inspiration and we always come up with crazy cool ideas that make me want to get out and shoot!

What’s your favorite go-to order?

Salmon. I'm going for the salmon every time!
